A BRIDGWATER swimmer is planning to cover the equivalent of the LENGTH of the English Channel each day for a week to raise money for charity.

Greg Kyd, 27, will cover a massive 231km this autumn as he attempts to complete the ‘Oceans 7 challenge’.

He will swim for 12 hours a day for seven consecutive days at six pools across Somerset, Dorset and Devon.

The operations analyst is planning a gruelling training schedule to cope with the demands of the swim, and explained that the psychological pressures and the physical strain make the challenge unique.

“I’m confident I can complete the time, but the distance will present a real challenge,” said Greg.

“A typical session in competitive clubs locally involves swimming around 2,400m for an hour; I will need to complete 2,800m per hour for 12 hours in a row, seven days in a row.

“I’m not in terrible shape, but it will need to improve. “The issue is partly the physical distance, but also the psychological pressures – it’s all about finding your own limits and challenging yourself.

Bridgwater Mercury:

“Endurance swimming is more difficult than in running or cycling as there are no other distractions – the boredom let’s you notice the minor injuries, strains and fatigue which are bound to develop.”

Under the rules of the challenge, Greg will be able to take toilet breaks, and 30-second breaks for food and water.

Despite being surrounded by water, dehydration could prove a problem and it is likely that he will be forced to go on a drip overnight.

He is hoping the Bridgwater public will get right behind him. He said: “It would be great if the local community could get involved and set personal challenges by swimming whatever distance they can manage or being innovative in creating fun challenges.

“I know some good swimmers will keep me company and help drag me along.

“There has been a decline in swimming numbers in the UK, and if we could get more people involved in swimming as well as raising money that would mean the event is a real success.”

All money raised will be split between the Ichthyosis charity, which helps people with a rare skin disorder, and the Wooden Spoon trust.
