FIRE crews were called to Salmon Parade this afternoon after a large fire broke out at Kellands Plant Sales yard.

Five fire engines attended the blaze which broke out at the construction equipment plant at around 15:45 today.

Fire fighters were concerned that there were some flammable cylinders on site which were promptly removed from the scene while the flames were brought under control.

Steve Harriot, who lives in La Ciotat House overlooking the scene, said: "I heard what sounded like explosions and had a look at of my window.

"All I could see was all the employees of Kellands scrambling about trying to get the diggers away from the fire.

"The flames were coming out of the roof of the building so it must have been quite a big fire."

A fire service spokesperson said: “We were called today at 15:43 to attend a fire at Kellands Industrial Plant in Salmon Parade.

“Five appliances plus a special appliance attended and the fire is now under control."

"On arrival crews requested a further two appliances to attend which were sent from Bridgwater and Burnham On Sea.

"They also requested the attendance of an aerial ladder platform, an environmental protection unit, an incident support unit and the incident command unit to attend."

"This was a small industrial unit.

"There is also acetylene cylinders and a quanitity of paint and thinners in the building not involved in fire."

Crews used two breathing apparatus, a compressed air foam jet and a main jet.

They also used a fog spray to suppress the asbestos fibres from the roof.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
