THE next phase of The Bridgwater Way (TBW) will see a new bridge built at the Showground roundabout on Taunton Road to improve the area for walkers and cyclists.

Work will begin this week to widen the narrow bridge which has been a long-term problem for pedestrians, while also creating a safe off road path for cyclists. A new bridge, which will run alongside the existing bridge, is due to be delivered as part of work that also includes a widened path at the roundabout and a crossing point.

Cllr Harvey Siggs, cabinet member for highways and transport at Somerset County Council, said: “This scheme marks the excellent progress of The Bridgwater Way, dealing with a long standing issue faced by local residents, while providing links between new and existing cycle infrastructure.

“I am doubly pleased that this location is being addressed, as it was where we originally launched The Bridgwater Way project in June 2013.”

TBW is a partnership between the district and county councils and Sustrans.

It aims to inspire and encourage residents who might be new to cycling or want to build experience to take up their range of services including cycle servicing, cycle training, travel coaching and more.
