A LAST-MINUTE bid to help a Bridgwater youngster compete in a world championship contest is being staged in the town.

Thirteen-year-old trampolinist Corey Walkes has been selected as one of four British boys in his age group to represent the country at the World Age Group Championships 2014 in Daytona Beach, Florida, in November.

Corey has to self-fund his participation at a cost of approximately £2,500 to compete as a Great Britain Junior Trampoline Gymnast.

He has raised £1,220 so far through his Virgin Money Page – which you can visit here – but is still only halfway to what is needed.

Now Quayside Trampoline Club, where Corey trains, is holding a ‘fun bounce and play afternoon’ on Sunday to help him reach his total and allow Corey and his international performance coach Sue Bramble to fly out the following week.

Corey said: “To be selected to compete for Great Britain is such an honour.

“Everyone at Quayside is so supportive in putting on this event, I hope loads of people come and see how amazing the facilities are at Quayside and enjoy helping me and Sue reach our target.”

The event will take place from 1pm to 4pm and is open to all members and non-members at a cost of just £5 with trampolining, gymnastics and parkour activities and an opportunity to watch young Corey himself demonstrate some of his trampolining skills.

There will be prizes for the best fancy dress costume with a Great Britain theme and raffle and refreshments including home-made cakes for sale.

The World Trampoline and Tumbling Championships, held annually except in the Olympic year, determines the men’s and women’s World Champions in four events: trampoline, synchronized trampoline, tumbling and double minitrampoline.

The two events are expected to showcase more than 1,100 athletes with 655 gymnasts in the Junior competition from 36 countries.

The fundraising event is being put on with the support of both past and present Senior Great Britain Women's Team members, Aurora Necco and Laura Gallagher, who also train and coach at Quayside.
