BRIDGWATER Arts Centre is marking the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War by hosting a series of remembrance events.

On Friday, November 7, Somerset Heritage Centre curator Sam Astill will give an illustrated talk which focuses on what happened in Somerset at the outbreak of the war.

Sam will explore how the county was affected by the war and explain how new research is being undertaken as part of the Somerset Remembers project.

There will be an opportunity for questions after the talk. Next month will also see Bridgwater Arts Centre continue its commemoration of the Great War with a tribute in music, words and images titled Women of World War One.

The event, held on Saturday November 15, is a powerful and moving portrait of women’s lives, created by Musicians South-West in collaboration with Petra Schofield and Magic Penny Productions.

Poetry and prose on the subject of women’s experience of this cataclysmic event will be vividly illustrated with slides and piano and stringed instrument music and voiced by female composers who were writing during the War.
