STUDENTS from schools across the Bridgwater area have been learning about the role of local government and understanding the functions of local democracy in the town.

Sedgemoor District Council invited schools to take part in Local Democracy Day last Thursday at Bridgwater YMCA in Friarn Avenue.

Students were able to ask questions and discuss topics with local councillors during a speed-dating style event as part of the day.

The youngsters were also asked for their opinions on what local services matter most to them.

Cllr Duncan McGinty, leader of Sedgemoor District Council, said: “At the moment, most young people do not view local politics as important in their daily lives.

“I hope that the national coverage about the Scottish referendum has sparked a bit of interest in our youngsters.

“They are the electors of tomorrow and things that are decided now by councils will have an effect on their later lives.

“By holding events such as this, we are hoping that students realise that they can have a say and encourage them to take part in the running of their communities.”

The children were also given a talk on community safety and anti-social behaviour and consulted on The Meads Eco-Park project.
