NIGHT-TIME revellers have been urged to stay away from the renovation works at the Town Bridge in Bridgwater after engineers voiced their concerns about large numbers of people gathering there.

Security staff hired by Somerset County Council, which is overseeing the restoration works to the bridge, say people are causing disruption by hanging round the site when pubs, bars and clubs close late at night.

They say they are concerned that the volume of ‘sightseers’ could lead to someone getting hurt.

Wincanton-based construction company Crestmoor has been carrying out major work to repair the 150-year-old bridge since August.

Crestmoor Construction director Kenny Higgins said: “The works seem to attract people when it comes to people leaving the pubs in the evening and there seem to be some brave people who think they can access the site.

“It is causing us great concern. We have a duty of care and I would urge people to not gather there.

“We have security on site but the last thing we want is for anyone to get injured.”

Mr Higgins added that although the disruption has not directly impeded the works so far, it is not aiding the progress of the project.

Cllr Harvey Siggs, said: “The people of Bridgwater have once again been outstanding in their support for this project.

“It is with a heavy heart I have heard that evening security on-site have routinely had to deal with those worse for the effects of drink near to the structure, and had to intervene with groups causing disruption in the area.

“While the bridge works have not been directly affected it is disappointing that individuals could put themselves and others at risk, as well as the timely completion of the project.
