VOLUNTEERS helping to clean up the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal were handed a cash boost from Westover ward councillors last week.

The West Country Inland Waterways Association have been awarded £1,000 to help their efforts in returning the canal to a navigable waterway.

Mike Slade, the local volunteer coordinator for the West Country patch, said: “The grant will be massively helpful.

“It means we can buy more tools and hopefully recruit more people to help in cleaning the canal up.

“We’re trying to promote Bridgwater and the canal is such a lovely area that could be a real asset.”

There will be a new visitor information centre open at the docks which will also serve as a meeting point for the volunteers to meet before going out on their clean-up parties.

Westover ward councillor, Brian Smedley said: “They’re doing fantastic work in terms of clearing away litter and cutting back the vegetation.

“We have this valuable natural resource running right through Bridgwater and we want to help make it usable to the whole community.”
