THE first football game has been played on pitches provided in North-East Bridgwater from money given by EDF Energy.

The pitches were created to give green space back to the community after EDF bought up the former Innovia/British Cellophane site and its football pitches as part of the Hinkley Point C power station project.

Bridgwater Sports Football Club kicked off its new season on Saturday with a family day on the new Sport England-standard pitches.

The club played a family match and invited the EDF Energy team responsible for building the pitches to join in.

Councillor and long term Bridgwater Sports Football Club supporter Leigh Redman said: “As is becoming tradition, the family day saw older and many ex-members taking on the younger players in the club.

“This year saw a number of father and son combos with special guest appearances from EDF Energy staff.

“Bridgwater Sports FC remains one of only two clubs in the league which runs three teams. With the new facilities the club are looking forward to a great future.

“Being so close to the proposed Hinkley Point C workers’ accommodation block we will not be short of players for our three sides and hope to bring home many more trophies”.

Colin Buckley, EDF Energy Senior Facilities Manager, said: “It was great to play on these pitches as we've taken huge pride in delivering them. Taking part in the first ever game was a real privilege.”
