A PAIR of teenage Amman Valley pals ended a day of drinking in police cells after turning on each other during a street brawl.

Thomas Spooner, of 21 Graig Road in Gwaun cae Gurwen, and Keiran Alexander Lane, of 21 Brook Terrace, Tairgwaith, appeared side-by-side in the dock at Llanelli magistrates court to plead guilty to using threatening words and behaviour – towards each other – during the incident on February 9.

Lane, aged 19, and Spooner, 18, had spent the day drinking together and watching Wales win 16-6 against France at the Stade de France.

Ellie Morgan, prosecuting, told how police officers dispersed a large group of people from outside the Raven Inn, Garnant, after reports of a disturbance.

“Part of the group headed towards the Constitutional Club,” said Ms Morgan.

“But the officers then heard the sounds of another disturbance coming from that direction.

“They sawtwo of the males walking into a side alley, followed by the rest of the group.

“As the officers approached they could see that the two males were fighting and trading punches with each other.

“There was a large group of onlookers watching. “Both of the males were arrested. ”

In interview, the pair told police they had been drinking since 11am.

Gareth Jones, appearing for both defendants, told the court Spooner and Lane were “very good friends”.

He added: “Unfortunately, on that day they had arranged to go out with friends to watch the rugby.

“At some point Spooner was assaulted by an unknown male and as a result he had an argument with his best friend.

“Somehow it ended up with the two them fighting.”

Lane, a welder, was fined £110 while unemployed Spooner was fined £75. They were each ordered to pay £85 costs and a £20 surcharge.
