A STUDENT from Bridgwater College is preparing for a National Triathlon competition.

Frances Palmer, from West Huntspill, will enter the National Junior Triathalon at Eton Dorney, Buckinghamshire, in August.

She first started competing in triathlons at the age of just 13, while at the Kings of Wessex School in Cheddar, and is now studying the BTEC Level 3 in Development, Coaching and Fitness course at the college.

Frances, 16, said: “I hope to beat my ranking at this year’s Eton Dorney event and go on to National competitions next year, aiming for some good results and a place in the South West Elite Talent Academy.

“I am currently an Assistant Junior Triathlete Coach at Burnham Swim and Sports Academy, which I love, as I can encourage children to take up the sport and pass on my knowledge.

“I am very lucky to have a good support system around me, especially my mum who is always there to cheer me on.”

Each week Frances has three sessions of cycling, swimming and running outside of college hours, plus three personal training sessions, delivered by a student on the CYQ Level 3 Personal Training programme, at the College using the on-site gym.

Lloyd Dean, Frances’ lecturer, said: “Frances is a real self-starter and takes pride in her work. She is a keen sportswoman and is involved with many regional and national tri-athlete events - it’s a credit to her she can balance both her College work and competitions.”
