Relief for Bridgwater Carnival clubs as Burnham backs down on Friday switch

First published in Bridgwater Area News

HIGHBRIDGE and Burnham Carnival organisers have bowed to pressure and backed out of plans to hold their procession before Bridgwater Carnival – for this year at least.

The Burnham committee had caused a storm by proposing to run their event on a Friday, the day before Bridgwater, which has traditionally kicked off the Somerset County Guy Fawkes Carnival circuit.

But following a meeting this week, Highbridge and Burnham Carnival organisers have instead decided to keep their event on a Monday in 2013, although it will be held a week earlier than normal, on November 4, making it the second on the circuit after Bridgwater.

In a statement, the Highbridge and Burnham Carnival Association said: “At the monthly meeting of the association held on January 9, attended by a full committee, the date of our 2013 Carnival was discussed at length.

“All aspects of discussions between our committee, the Bridgwater clubs and other interested parties were taken on board.

“At the end of the discussion a vote was taken and because of the time constraints the committee opted for the Monday (November 4) following Bridgwater for 2013. “However, the committee will be conducting a full feasibility study throughout this year and work towards the development of a detailed consultation proposal for a move to the first Friday in 2014.

“The committee hopes that all parties will support this decision and help us to achieve a successful carnival this year.”

Why is it such a disgrace it had nothing to do with Bridgwater Carnival Committee, It was clubs who were objecting to the move and not just from Bridgwater either, I'm guessing your making your statement with out all the facts. There has been some poor reporting on this subject Via the Media and general bad feeling has been Generated by it, When deep down most of the people Involved have and will continue to work with Burnham Committee on the future of there Carnival as well as others. All this talk of Boycotts etc was generated by the minority and not one Bridgwater Club had come forward and said they would boycott Burnham Carnival if it went for it's prefered date. It's amazing how these things get out of hand.

The whole toing froing and arguing has only done one thing IMO - damaged the image of the scene in the eyes of those outside Somerset.

If the Carnival scene is serious about attracting tourists and the tourist £££ then they need to be seen to be working together, rather than in-fighting!

To be fair there has been a lot of great suggestions put forward and the clubs and Burnham Committee have worked together quite well and I hope will continue to do so, but as always a few Individuals seem to stir things up and that together with as I've already said poor reporting with very little fact this has unfortunately done some damage, Hopefully all will be happy for now and that both sides now do the right thing and talk about the future sensibly and not based on knee jerk reactions and decisions. Communication is the key here as in many situations.

Oh I agree there seems to be a certain level of antagonism and stirring, but any negative association tends to stick in a tourist's mind.

Id agree there, it would make sense to merge the Bridgwater and N Petherton carnivals so they were on the same night.

Trouble is the Carnival would probably end up finishing very late after the carts have travelled up the A38.

What do you mean by this? All the Carnivals are organised Independently but the 7 Somerset Carnivals Bridgwater, North Petherton, Burnham, Shepton Malllet, Wells and Glastonbury do fall under the Somerset County Carnival Committee but this committee is classed as an Advisory Committee and cannot tell Individual Carnivals how they should be Organised but it is seen to be good Practice to take your Changes to the Somerset committee meetings for Discussion.

Interesting thought Bridgwater has a 400+ years of history and some Carnivals you have mentioned have only been around since the 60's/70's

They did!

But according to historical documents, the introduction of light bulbs in 1603 really captured people's imagination, as did the impressive sound systems in 1621.

The poor horses did struggle with all the commotion somewhat though, up until diesel tractors were used at some point during the 1650's!
