Bridgwater Carnival and North Petherton Carnival collection totals

STREET collections from North Petherton Carnival were £2,000 up on last year, but those at Bridgwater Carnival were £3,000 down.

A total of £15,662 was collected at North Petherton's procession on Saturday night, an improvement on 2008, when torrential rain kept many spectators away.

North Petherton Carnival president Eileen Brunton said: "We are quite happy with that. Every carnival committee neeeds money at the moment to ensure carnival survives."

At Bridgwater on Friday night, collections totalled £24,000.

Bridgwater Carnival collection officer Mark Robson said: "We have to thank the people for their generosity, giving to carnival all year round, and the collectors for their fantastic work.

“I would also like to thank all the charities and collection sub-committee.”

How pathetic. We were told to expect 100,000 people in town for the carnival that works out at about 2-3p perperson.I hope all the caterers gave a generous donation to carnival collection if they did then the people who watched carnival are pathetic!!! These people work hard all year round to put on such a good show what a sad reward that people couldnt even put in a £1 per person for the privilege of watching the procession which was brilliant.

oh martini girl wisdom you have not. like you i am dis-appointed at the lack of monies collected for charity, however the charities have jumped on the back of the annual event. All good causes they might be, do you forget that it is bridgy people who support the clubs 52 wks a yr. raffles, festivals & competitions, also no doubt employers turn a blind eye to workers leaving early and arriving late.
where do most big clubs come from you guessed it bridgy and like you i suspect most of the money came from locals. costly it is, good advertisement for the town? it might be, perhaps the tour operators could put extra pound per person on coach trips and donate to brdgy carnival, not alot to ask and it could make all the difference. it would be nice to see how much revenue increase in local trades arise from carnival perhaps they could make a donation, but not knowing all the ins & outs would reserve judgement on that issue
