SCHOOLS are being invited to take part in exciting and innovative activities for this year’s Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival celebrations.

Following the success of last year’s carnival education projects, pupils from Sedgemoor’s primary and secondary schools are being given the chance to get involved with Bridgwater Carnival 2013 - which takes place on November 2.

Chris Hocking, Bridgwater Carnival Committee life member, said: “Involving children in Bridgwater Carnival activities is absolutely vital in ensuring the town’s carnival celebrations continue for many years to come.”

Carnival organisers are arranging five separate educational projects for children to participate in.

The Friday Fireworks and Fawkes project will see children get help from carnival experts to construct their very own lanterns, and then take part in a special lantern parade before the carnival fireworks display begins on Friday, November 1.

Leading the parade will be an effigy of Guy Fawkes, which will be ceremoniously lit at the end of the display by the president of Bridgwater Carnival, Rita Jones, signifying the start of the 2013 carnival celebrations.

Two children’s dance parades will take part on carnival day in Fore Street, Cornhill and High Street, choreographed by Robert Blake Science College’s Claire Stokes.

Schools can also decorate two large model carnival masks which will be placed on display in the town centre, or make a model carnival cart to win prizes.

The carts will be displayed at the Bridgwater Carnival Centre.

There is also a ‘Write a Carnival Story’ competition where children write their own 500-word story about carnival and what it means to them, or a 40-line poem on the same topic.
