MOVING Bridgwater’s post office outside the town centre would be bad for Eastover, community leaders say.
Consultation for proposals by Post Office Ltd to move the current temporary post office to a permanent home in Sainsbury’s at The Clink ended this week.
Sedgemoor District Council has submitted a letter to the Post Office listing why it feels the current scheme would harm the council’s proposals for Eastover.
The letter reads: “We understand the operating model of post offices and the importance this places on selecting sustainable business partners to operate the model, but our view is that the proposed move, further away from the town centre, is not one we can support.
“The likely reduction the move would have in footfall to the Town Centre will have a negative impact but more importantly, our view is that it will present genuine accessibility issues to people, particularly those more venerable members of the community.”
The Post Office has defended its decision to look at Sainsbury’s over the other applicant, Hooks, feeling the supermarket was a more sustainable business, offering longer opening hours.
