EDF Energy is today due to begin the first in a series of local road improvements linked to its site preparation work for the planned Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.
The first of the schemes involves creating a crossing for horses at Farringdon Hill, near Stogursey, and cutting back vegetation and putting in a waiting area for horses either side of the road.
Other schemes later in the year will involve increasing visibility for road users joining the C182, Cannington to Hinkley Point road, at Claylands Corner, as well as traffic calming measures in Cannington, including a new pedestrian crossing at Rodway.
Major works on two new roundabouts are also planned at Sandford Corner on the A39 and at Washford Cross, near Williton.
Work is also being planned to help manage traffic flow at Broadway and Taunton Road in Bridgwater.
Nigel Cann, Hinkley Point C's construction director, said: "By investing in these road improvements alongside our recent announcement of a new £3 million traffic management system, we are determined to minimise the impact for local road users.
“Our transport strategy is based on reducing impact by delivering as much material as possible by sea."
David Hall, Somerset County Council's cabinet member for economic development, said: “As highways authority the county council will continue to work with EDF to ensure work is carried out safely and efficiently.”
