A PENSIONER from Somerset has died following a three-vehicle collision on the A39 at West Quantoxhead earlier this month.

The 71-year-old man, from Burnham, died on Thursday (July 26) in Bristol's Frenchay Hospital, almost two weeks after the incident on July 14.

Police said the collision happened when a Vauxhall Meriva travelling on the A39 towards West Quantoxhead was reported to have crossed the double white line in the centre of the road.

It was in collision with a skip lorry travelling in the opposite direction, which tried to take evasive action, causing it to drive into the roadside verge, where it was in collision with an overhanging branch.

The branch hit a third vehicle – a Ford Transit van – which was also travelling away from West Quantoxhead.

The 71-year-old man, who was driving the Meriva, was taken by air ambulance to Frenchay Hospital, where he has since died.

Witnesses to the collision should call 101.
