MORE than 5,000 revellers battled against the mud to enjoy this year's Newt Beer Festival in North Newton.

The event, on Friday and Saturday, saw carefully selected bands delight audiences across two stages - new to this year's festival.

Festival-goers were also treated to a selection of 109 beers and a variety of ciders, both local and countrywide.

Organiser Frank Clegg said turnout for the festival was good, despite the whole site being bogged down in mud.

He said on Saturday (July 14): “I was worried the weather would put people off, but we've had around 5,000 people turn up today. They've loved it and they've loved the mud.

“The car park has been chaos but farmers have helped us out with tractors, without being asked.

“There has been fantastic local support for this and the money goes to North Newton Primary School and will help towards trips and equipment.”

The festival usually gets between 5,000 to 7,000 people from all around, not to mention about 100 bands contacting organisers, who select the best.

Frank added: “We had a reggae band this year who were amazing.”

Acts included the Magnus Puto, the Indigo Kings, Green and Bushell, the Jury, Punk's not Dad, Flutatious, the Rollin' Clones and much more.
