THE Mercury has received reports of significant police activity in the area around Bridgwater Railway Station.

One witness said a car being chased by police crashed into metal railings near the station.

Three occupants of the vehicle are reported to have fled in different directions.

Police are currently searching buildings opposite the station.

The Mercury understands around eight police vehicles and more than a dozen officers are involved.

Avon and Somerset Police has so far made no comment.
