FASHION giant Mulberry has applied to build a new factory in Bridgwater – potentially bringing 300 jobs to the town.

The company, which recently announced a 38% increase in turnover, has already expanded its existing Chilcompton factory by almost a third.

The application to Sedgemoor District Council is for detailed permission as outline permission for employment use of the site, between Bristol Road and Kings Road, has been granted.

Representing a £7.5m investment, the project has backing from the Government’s Regional Growth Fund.

It would double the UK production of Mulberry which was launched as a fashion brand back in 1971 and has expanded internationally.

Council leader Duncan McGinty said: “We are delighted Mulberry has chosen to consider Bridgwater for this important development and welcome the opportunities it will bring for employment and training.

“We believe it illustrates the considerable attraction our district has as a first class location for businesses ranging from start-up local companies to those with international reputations.

“We are working closely with the company to help prepare its application to ensure it meets our requirements including an employment and skills agreement.”
