THE cause of a fire overnight (May 14) at a scrapyard at Somerset Bridge is currently being investigated.

Two fire engines from Bridgwater were sent out at just before 2am this morning to reports of flames and smoke in a scrap yard off of Taunton Road, Bridgwater.

On arrival crews asked for assistance with a further two fire engines from Taunton and water carrier and hydraulic platform from Bridgwater.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire involved a scrap yard containing about 350 vehicles, a large pile of tyres and workshop surrounded by corrugated metal fence."

At 3am the firefighters asked for the an incident support unit from Taunton and all available foam stock from Taunton and Bridgwater to help fight the blaze.

By 5am the firefighters had the incident under the control and the operation was being scaled down.

The Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said that 50 per cent of the scrapyard had been damaged by fire.

And he added: "The cause of the fire is being investigated."
