PROTESTORS concerned about the clearing of plantlife near Hinkley Point by the site's operator EDF Energy have ended their protest after spending the night in a tree near the power plant.

Three men climbed the tree in the early hours of Tuesday morning and refused requests from EDF security staff to leave before eventually climbing down on Wednesday morning.

EDF spokesman Gordon Bell said: "Two protesters left the area at around 9.30am. The remaining individual departed around one hour later."

Theo Simon, from the South West Against Nuclear group, was in touch with the protestors who have scaled the tree.

Mr Simon said the protest was not just about trees but about the whole issue of nuclear power.

He said: "We want the Government to think again about its pro-nuclear stance."

It is understood the protestors were on private land to the west of the power station and have so far refused all requests to leave.

Mr Bell told the Mercury that all work to remove plantlife at the site so far was "not part of site preparation works" and was part of "normal land management".

Apart from attaining some kudos among like minded people. What exactly do they think they are achieving by this ?
Please let's not have endless posts about raising awareness. This is purely about their 10 mins of being noticed.

When are people going to wake up?!

EDF have by-passed planning law, they've bought £50M worth of land from Lady Gass PRIOR to gaining planning consent. Ask yourselves - why would they do that?

Also, The proposed EPR reactors already have a poor safety record and EDF have have admitted that the reactors in Flamenville in France have welding problems in the pressure heads. Do you really want a Chernobyl built on your doorstep? I don't.

I used to climb trees as a child. I grew out of it when I discovered alcohol and females.

Nice weather for penguins last night.

Who supports these people, where do they get their money?

They would be better protesting against poverty and cruelty.

I don't want yet another power station simmering next to me. While you people are all watching soap operas or daytime TV EDF are building a reactor that produces one of the most poisonous substances known to man. I salute these young men, at least they have the guts to speak out and try to bring it to the attention of those that seem to have no care about our environment or it's future. Whether it goes ahead or not, they HAVE made a difference. If it means just one person looking up what is happening as a result of Chernobyl and Fukoshima on the internet then they have been successful. Oh and I'm talking about the TRUTH, not what is broadcast on the BBC or ITN.

Well done Protestors!!!! We need to expose the flouting of planning law surrounding the Hinkley C proposals. How can due process have been followed when EDF bought £50M of land prior to official consent being granted?

Err apart from your comment being so off-topic it's way out of the ball-park, what genuine cause is that then - shooting civilians or clearing the way for the Trans-Afghan gas pipeline?

Before anyone raises a flag for nuclear power/weapons would it not be prudent to undertake as much research as possible, rather than the knee-jerk reactions that seem to be appearing in favour of Hinkley C, and the immediate condemnation of people who protest. Its YOUR safety they are protesting for.

Those young protesters are probably employed and took holiday or lost pay for their day or so in the tree. I know many people, myself included who would happily forgo a days wages if it meant even one person taking the responsible route for the future of their children and grandchildren, and doing some sensible research like these men have obviously done. They are not protesting for the hell of it, just think about it and be grateful that someone actually cares enough to make a stand.

The weapons our government sold Gadaffi and ultimately ones our forces used against him used depleted uranium.... where do you think it comes from? Will you look away at the pictures on the internet that show the damage nuclear can do? The deformed children, the dying, the poisoned land. If you research the subject you will find that it is difficult to determine whether it is the energy or the weapons that are the ultimate goal.

A good place to start is the following site. From there you will be able to tap into various professors and researchers who know more about the subject that anyone in the debate. Listen to them!
