EDF cash boost for Sedgemoor

EDF cash boost for Sedgemoor EDF cash boost for Sedgemoor

COMMUNITIES in Sedgemoor are set to receive a share of £30 million from EDF Energy designed to limit the impact of preparation works at Hinkley Point C.

A legal document known as Section 106 has been signed by West Somerset Council, EDF and Lady Gass releasing funding for housing, transport, leisure facilities and a number of other things aimed at offsetting the effects of the development on people in the area.

Sedgemoor District Council, Bridgwater College and emergency services are among the organisations due to receive money from the package, while the community impact mitigation fund includes £500,000 set aside for Stogursey, the parish closest to the site, and Cannington.

Sedgemoor District Council leader, Duncan McGinty, said: “We hope that the money set aside for skills and training can be used in time to help ensure local people can take advantage of the jobs that will be created if the main scheme goes ahead.

“It is clear from the work we are doing with colleagues in other authorities on the impact the project is likely to have on all our lives, that it is important to have in place the right safeguards, mitigation and compensation packages.”

A board will also established as part of the agreement with two representatives from each of Sedgemoor District Council, West Somerset Council, Somerset County Council and EDF, which will make recommendations about further contributions.

Richard Mayson of EDF said: “We are very aware of the impacts the preparatory works will have on the local area, so we have worked very hard with the local authority to identify and mitigate the impacts and bring forward improvements to local services and facilities.”

Not a very subtle brown envelope job is it ?

It's going to happen, it HAS to happen - or we shall have mains outages in the future.
On this basis, try to make the best of what you may consider a bad job - and get as much out of it as you can.
It is good that the section 106 money is in the hands of the local representatives and is not hidden away with vague promises from EDF.

As much as I have major reservations about nuclear power the fact is Hinkley C is going to happen therefore the local community who are going to have to live with monstrosity must maximise the return. The first on the list must be the Bridgwater bypass followed by all the other community wide benefits referred to.

Does anyone know the timescale for the monies allocated to communities? My understanding is that it's over a number of years and therefore a lot smaller per annum than the number suggests?

Before Christmas I signed a petition asking for a new road to Hinkley Point for construction traffic.Does anybody know if it was handed to EDF,and what there response was?

The answer to the request to EDF for a by-pass for Bridgwater was as it has been from day one "NO" it is not necessary the current road infrastructure can cope. (according to EDF's computer analysis)

Every time they (EdF) do a presentation in Cannington we tell them quite firmly that the traffic will cause chaos. All we get back from them is smiles and "Yes we hear what you are saying" No action though.

Except for their transport "Expert" comes from Shropshire, he hasn't the faintest idea regards local issues and geography. He simply fails to listen.

He actually told us that as there has not been a death on the C182 at the junction of Park lane at the top of Rodway, so he cannot see there is a problem.

Bit like telling the passengers of a cruise liner it is safe in certain parts of the Mediterranean as there has never been an accident in that vicinity to date.

The legal document Section 106 isn't worth the paper it's signed on. I am a fairly new resident of Wilstock Village at North Petherton. In my agreement there are a number of Section 106 agreements, things like a children's play area, 42 hectare country park, road works at Huntworth Roundabout, I could go on!! Sedgemoor District Council and Somerset County Council have failed to enforce any of these supposedly binding legal agreements and if they hold true to form they won't enforce this one either.

Jonty45 - not sure you are entirely correct. Section 106 monies are given to the Council by the developers as part of the planning permission and are held by the Council to put towards developments they consider beneficial. I believe each town has an allocation depending on the amount of building carried out in that town.

You may need to get a project together to put to the Council to release the money; I do know that some councils have a problem getting rid of all the section 106 money they have accumulated.

Don't sit back - contact your Council to see how much is in the kitty and USE IT! We have certainly used all our allocation here.

I take your point, my issue is that these are works to be undertaken by the developer which have not been done to date.

Don't feed the troll.
S/He copies and pastes that on almost every article (spelling and grammar errors and all).
Just looking for a bite.
Not even got the sense to get his/her comment coherent, let alone understand the concept of free speech, moderation in forums and human rights.

Nothing like a bit of bribery and corruption to grease the wheels of progress. There"s a little whisper going around that Mr. Blobby has greased some palms in his time, and got away with some very serious matters.
