A SUCCESSFUL charity bookshop in Burnham has been forced to close its doors for foreseeable future.

The Weekly News reported in May how the Burnham Rotary Club initiative was proving a hit - thanks to the economic downturn in the town centre.

Letting agents Abbott and Frost allowed the club to use the vacant former Thresher's wine shop in College Street as they could not find anyone to take the premises over.

But now the agents have finally found a potential new tenant and have asked the Rotarians to vacate the shop.

George Moon, from the Rotary Club, said: “This bookshop has been easily the most long-running and successful ever, and the club is grateful to Thresher's and to Abbott and Frost for their co-operation in allowing us to use the empty shop since the start of August last year, and to the many people who have donated good, clean books for re-sale, helping us raise over £9,000.

“The Rotary bookshop has become an annual event, normally opening during late July or early August each year, and the club hopes to be able to find suitable empty premises to use this coming summer.

“If successful, details will be announced nearer the time but meanwhile the books will be put into storage and no further donations are needed for the time being.”

The bookshop will closure for the time being at 4pm on Saturday after opening every day during half term this week.
