YEAR eight students from East Bridgwater Community School visited Bristol City FC stadium Ashton Gate for day that was out of this world...literally.

During Rocket Technology Day students enjoyed an interactive presentation about man’s most important achievements in space, from the first rockets to the new space race – the private space industry.

They learnt about the first animal in space; a dog called Laika, and how much closer to tourist space travel we are as a nation.

Then they split into groups to build their own rockets with some very complicated instructions and after lunch there was a talk by a worker at Airbus on careers in aircraft design and manufacture.

A show called Propulsion Lab followed, which taught them about how rocket engines work.

The group then launched their handcrafted rockets in the car park to round the day off with a bang – although some ended up in trees or on a roundabout.
