PLANS to hold Highbridge and Burnham Carnival on a Friday night in future have been ditched.

The committee had hoped to stage the glittering event on the first Friday before the Bridgwater procession from 2012.

Members believed this would help raise the profile of Highbridge and Burnham's night and give the local economy a big boost.

But Jamie Hawkes, Highbridge and Burnham Carnival chief marshal, confirmed this morning the event would be held on the Monday after Bridgwater, Weston and North Petherton.

It means next year's parade will take place on November 12 as things currently stand.

The decision was made after police, fire and paramedics raised concerns about potential traffic issues on the A38 and increased crime and disorder if it took place on the Friday.

Mr Hawkes said: "We have been in consultation with the emergency services and after considering the implications of a Friday night we have decided to reconsider."
