EAST Bridgwater Community School is making impressive progress, say Ofsted inspectors.

Its latest Ofsted report, published in March, rated the school “satisfactory” overall, but said it had “good” capacity for sustained improvement.

After the school was inspected in November 2009, Ofsted rated it “inadequate” and said it required “significant improvement”.

The latest report, however, says the school has been transformed since head teacher Peter Elliott took the helm in January 2010.

The report says: “The dynamic leadership of the head teacher has been instrumental in bringing about rapid improvement since the last inspection.

“This is most noticeable in teaching, which is now good, in attendance, which is now average, and in students’ behaviour.”

Of the 27 individual areas assessed, only one was considered inadequate; the rest were rated either good or satisfactory.

The report also revealed the results of a parent questionnaire, which showed that 85% believed their child was happy at school, while 81% believed their child was making good progress.

Ofsted said East Bridgwater now needed to concentrate on helping pupils develop their literacy skills, and to improve the communication links with parents and carers who do not have access to the internet.

A school spokesman said: “The head teacher and governors would like to acknowledge and thank all staff at the school for their hard work, dedication and commitment to bringing about positive change for the young adults in their care.”
