THE Palace nightclub in Bridgwater is to stay open following a licence review, on the provision certain conditions are met, such as the installation of more CCTV.

The review was called by police after concerns were raised about alleged drunken violence and underage alcohol sales at the Penel Orlieu nightclub.

But police have since retracted the accusation “systematic violence” was used by door staff, admitting evidence was lacking.

Sgt Paul Endicott told the Mercury: “We formally withdraw the comment that systematic violence was used by door staff.

“It was not indicative of what goes on in The Palace at all.

“The police are satisfied that at no time has there been systematic violence at The Palace at any time.”

He said the outcome was fair and he did not want to take business away from people.

Sedgemoor District Council licensing and gambling panel resolved to accept the conditions suggested by both parties.

Chairman Gill Slocombe said: “It [the review] has brought about some good points. There have been many issues and there’s been a perception in this town that many things are not right.”

But she said she hoped the police and nightclub staff would work together in future.
