A Bridgwater-built drag racer made entirely from power tools roared to victory in a unique competition at the weekend.
The wacky racer, designed by local man Barry Lee, is powered by a petrol disc cutter and features a fly-by-wire electric throttle similar to the one in Jenson Button's Mclaren F1 car.
It has been designed and put together by a team of engineers and tool experts from Toolstation in Bridgwater.
Dubbed 'Bolt Lightning', the machine scooped first prize in the national power tool drag racing championships at the Fleet Air Arm Museum on Saturday and Sunday, reaching speeds of well over 40mph.
Only vehicles powered by normal power tools can compete in the championships.
Barry said: “We knew there would be some really tough competition, and I have to say the machine from TV's The Gadget Show, which was built by Fleet Air Arm engineers, looked awesome.
“But our kart is so radical and combines such an extraordinary mix of traditional ideas and cutting-edge sophisticated engineering that we were confident we had the edge.”
Barry and his team will donate the winner's cheque for £1,250 to local charity bibic.
