Council to review Blake Hall licence after noise complaints

THE owner of a popular Bridgwater venue has described claims that his club is too loud as “ridiculous”.

Sedgemoor District Council’s licensing panel is meeting tomorrow to review the premises licence at Blake Hall in St Saviours Road following a complaint about noise levels.

Its options include revoking, suspending or modifying the licence, banning certain activities, or taking no action.

The club hosts regular, jive, ballroom and line dancing nights, and occasional rock band nights, but according to a report for Thursday’s meeting, Brian Parker, owner of the Admirals Rest Guest House in Taunton Road, has complained his guests are being disturbed by “unacceptable levels of noise”.

However, when the Mercury contacted the guesthouse, Mr Parker denied making a complaint and declined to comment.

Mark Duvall, licence holder at the Blake Hall, says he will backed by an army of supporters at Thursday’s meeting, who support his mission to transform the club into a traditional dance hall venue, serving an older clientele than other town pubs and clubs.

He said: “We’ve had a lot of support and a lot of the people who use the club will be there.

“We never have any problems but we’ve basically got one person causing a rumpus.

“It’s ridiculous to say we are too loud. We only have rock bands every six weeks or so, and the music always stops before midnight.

“I even pulled the plug on one band when I felt they were getting too loud and we’ve put in heavy duty curtains to limit the sound.”

This is so ridiculous. One complaint and it goes before Sedgemoor to review it's licence. We live near the Bridgwater and Albion rugby club and we have complained about the noise of the disco's going on till late on some occasions untill 2.00am and we have had no help at all . The last disco was on Friday 19th August 2010 it went on untill 2.00am you could lay in bed and hear every word the dj was saying plus the loud music a complaint was made but I think it fell on deaf ears.18 months ago a new landlord took over the pub near us and the first Saturday night he was there he had a " GIG " i believe they call it ,that went on untill 4.30am and that was the first of many . The police have been called many many times and complaints made to the licencing authorities but still he carries on. This person makes one complaint and they sort it. Whats the difference between him and what we have to put up with ????

how silly we have freinds who live a few doors away from the club you cant even hear the noise .The pub goers leaving the town make more noise than the club.

I have attended a number of Rock Nights at the venue.

They are very well marshalled - the security staff do not allow anyone out of the premises with drinks or bottles and inside is a very friendly atmosphere - people are there for the music !!

Compare that to the high street with the strong police presence and constant fights and disturbances both inside and outside of Remedies etc, yet you don't hear anyone complaining about that !!

I would sooner go to the Blake Hall than anywhere in the high street any night of the week.

S.A.M Bridgwater and cuthbertbullrush, bridgwater how true your comments are. Have the council and the licencing authorities nothing better to do with their time and our money? Shame on them. Blake hall was and I believe still is a respected venue with decent people using it.
