College students get on their bike for charity

TWO Bridgwater College students will be getting on their bikes in preparation for an opportunity of a lifetime in South Africa.

Jack Bennett and Daniel Wright plan to cycle from John O'Groats to Lands End in August to raise money for a trip to work with underprivileged children in Port Elizabeth.

The 17-year-olds hope to raise as much money as possible during their mammoth 963-mile ride before the charity trip with the Umzingisi Project next March.

In South Africa, the students will coach children in a range of sports including football, cricket and hockey, organise a community sports event and visit an orphanage, which will benefit from the money raised.

Jack said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to experience another culture and contribute towards a struggling community.

“In preparation for the trip, we intend to raise money to take the orphanage children out on a day trip, to provide food for all children at the sports tournament, and to provide local community schools with much needed equipment.”

The pair will begin the unaided 14-day ride on August 2 and have been training consistently for the past few months.

Jack added: “We are passionate about our charity and we want to make a difference to those who do not have the sporting equipment we take for granted. We are fully prepared and excited with the prospect of starting the trip.”

A special account has been set up for Jack and Dan's venture - cheques, made payable to Support Jack and Dan, can be sent to Skidmarx Cycles in Church Street, Highbridge.
