FORMER England rugby international Gareth Chilcott was the star guest at a fundraising event for North Newton man Jim Clatworthy.
Front row forward Gareth attended a dinner at North Petherton RFC, which raised £5,500 for the Jim Clatworthy Appeal - a fund set up to pay for pioneering medical treatment for rugby veteran Jim.
Jim said: “It was a marvellous night and a complete sell-out. I played with Gareth years and years ago - it was in 1972 for the Somerset Colts.
“He recognised me straight away. It was great to see him, he really is a nice guy and gave a great speech.”
The Mercury has reported how after being diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour last July, Jim was selected for a potentially life-saving medical trial in France.
He now must wear a hat fitted with electrodes for two years, and has to fly back to Paris regularly.
He said: “It's going well at the moment and I can get on with my life. Last week I had my first scan since the treatment and should find out the results soon.
“We are so grateful for all the fundraising and help people have shown us. It really has been overwhelming.”
