Bridgwater Town Hall repair works get underway

WORK on restoring Bridgwater Town Hall finally got underway this week after years under a cover of blue sheeting and scaffolding.

Maintenance and building firm Rok has begun work on the roofing, external masonry repairs and cleaning, and window refurbishment.

Sedgemoor District Council estimates the work will take about 26 weeks to complete.

Sympathetic modern building techniques are being used to restore the outside of the 19th Century building to its former glories.

Workers are currently adapting the scaffolding to allow masonry cleaning to be carried out and the scaffolding netting is also being changed to protect passers-by from the façade cleaning techniques.

The former premises of the Bridgwater Bookshop is being used as a site office while the repairs are carried out.

Steve Bradley, area leader for Rok in Somerset, said: “The Bridgwater Town Hall external refurbishment is a really exciting project and as a local company we are delighted to be able to play a role in bringing the project to fruition. “We will be working closely with the council and keeping the community informed of progress throughout the contract.”

Councillor Paul Herbert, who is responsible for housing and project delivery at Sedgemoor District Council, said: “After listening to the desires of the community, we are delighted to be starting work on this project, and are particularly pleased we have fulfilled one of our key requirements by working with a range of local suppliers and contractors appointed through Rok.”

George Allen from Bridgwater-based project managers Allen Construction Consultancy, added: “We are extremely pleased to be part of this ambitions project to refurbish iconic buildings in the centre of Bridgwater.”
