Somerset bucks youth unemployment trend

WITH national youth unemployment figures at an all-time high careers, education, information, advice and guidance service Connexions Somerset is reminding young people in Somerset, 'Don’t panic - we're here to help'.

Connexions Somerset is working hard with young people not in education, employment or training.

Connexions Somerset chief executive Rachel Bendall said: “The most important message we can give is that we're here to help.

“We have experienced careers and skills advisers and employment and training advisers in our centres across the county who are on hand to offer help, advice and support.

“All our centres have vacancy boards advertising local job vacancies and apprenticeships and these can also be viewed on our website.

“We also run Project Somerset, the aim of which is to engage young people aged 14 to 18 who aren't in education, employment or training in a variety of activities, workshops and one-to-one interventions to help develop their practical employability skills.

"The project helps support their progression into sustainable and realistic employment, training and volunteering opportunities.”

The percentage of young people aged 16 to 18-years-old not in any education, employment or training in Somerset fell from 4.8% to 3.8% between 2006 and 2009.

Ms Bendall added: “If you're currently not working or want advice on what your options are, then come and see us - we're here to help.”

Connexions centres in Yeovil, Wells, Bridgwater and Taunton are open late on Tuesday evenings until 6.30pm.
