SCORES of happy campers descended on North Newton for the 18th Newt Beer Fest at the weekend - and not even the rain could dampen spirits.

The usual mix of live bands, hog roast, and 92 different ales kept the revellers happy despite numbers being heavily down on last year.

Organiser Frank Clegg blamed the poor weather on the Saturday but said the event was still a success overall.

He told the Mercury: “Because of the weather we were way down on last year - and £30,000 was lost on the gate over the weekend.

“It is disappointing when you work so hard all year round but everyone enjoyed themselves and still managed to drink as much beer as last year!”

He added: “It wasn't as successful as last time but we didn't lose any money - if we had held the festival the weekend before we would have had glorious sunshine so it just goes to show it's down to luck.”
