£500k of new buses for Bridgwater

PUBLIC transport users in Bridgwater are set to benefit from four new buses costing half a million pounds, it has been announced today.

Somerset County Council and First Buses have confirmed the huge investment in the town’s bus network, which they say will revolutionise the system.

The four cutting-edge buses, which will cost £125,000 each, will operate on the ‘Service 1’ route covering Bridgwater town centre, North Sydenham, Wills Road and Rhode Lane.

Featuring low-floor technology, the new ‘Euro 2000’ buses will each have a deployable ramp designed for wheelchair users, elderly people and disabled travellers.

There will also be designated wheelchair and buggy space and more spacious, larger seats designed to make journeys smoother and more comfortable.

Somerset County Council says the investment is another step towards beating congestion and climate change.

Cllr Anthony Trollope-Bellew, cabinet member for the environment, said: “Bridgwater deserves to have the best buses serving local people so we are able to cut down on congestion, improve access for older and disabled people and encourage more people onto the buses.

“This investment represents Somerset County Council’s commitment to deliver just that.”

Justin Davies, managing director of First Bristol, Somerset and Avon, added: “These brand new buses are part of our joint commitment with Somerset County Council to improving the quality and accessibility of local bus services throughout the region.

“The buses are bright, comfortable and accessible and we think customers will notice a real difference.”
