Pals pub crawl in support of majorettes

THIS group of plucky pals sported an array of wacky costumes before necking as many of their favourite tipples from Bridgwater's watering holes as possible - but all for a worthy cause!

In a bid to raise money for much-needed equipment for young members of the Somerset Sapphires majorette team, Sharon Godfrey and Debbie Marshall (pictured) came up with a plan, which they called the 'pram race'.

The Bridgwater-based majorettes wow the crowds at the town's Carnival every year but now they want to expand and visit more processions on the circuit - but with no sponsorship their dreams appeared unlikely.

But then Sharon and Debbie, along with dozens of friends, stepped in and raised nearly £400 to go towards a new sound system and generator for the troupe.

Sharon, whose 13-year-old daughter Kyesha is a majorette, explained: “We split into teams and had a list of 20 pubs in Bridgwater that each team had to go to.

“We each had to drink at least one of our favourite alcoholic drinks in each pub and get the landlord to sign a form to prove we did it.

“We followed this up with a disco in the evening and everyone had a great time - and I remember all of it!”

The fundraisers hope to be at least halfway towards their target of £2,000 after raising more than £400 bag packing at Morrisons with more fundraisers planned.

“It means everything to the girls to be able to travel to other Carnivals”, Sharon added.
