BRIDGWATER College is celebrating after picking up two more prestigious prizes - bringing its total number of Beacon Awards to 11.

The college's carnival academy won the Churches' Award for sustainable college partnerships and the basic and key skills team won the OCR Award for functional skills.

Bridgwater College's carnival academy is designed to help people aged over 16 develop carnival-related skills and learn about all aspects of the tradition.

The Churches' Award is given to the college that has most effectively developed a sustainable partnership with local communities or faith groups.

Assessors look for imaginative use of college resources to meet community needs, with a focus on employability, vocational skills and building links with communities.

Chris Hocking, who coordinates the carnival academy at Bridgwater College said: “This is a wonderful achievement and fantastic to get recognition for all of the hard work that goes in to the academy.

“The academy is unusual because it covers such a cross-section of skills and involves almost every department at the college.

“We hope that the academy will spur on the next generation of float builders and carnival performers.”
