BRIDGWATER'S High Street was spectacularly lit up for the second time on Friday when 160 people lined the street for the highly anticipated squibbing event.

Once the final float had finished the procession, the unique and magical squibbing experience could take place and brave people held the traditional fireworks in place.

In a perfectly organised arrangement, the squibs were lit and with an explosion of light, lit up the High Street.

Squibbing officer Clive Kett - who experienced his 12th year in the role - spoke about the 300-year-old tradition.

He said: “It was a very successful night and a fantastic dry night. All the clubs enjoyed it. You could tell by the noise of the crowds that they enjoyed it too.

“It is such a great event and something which must continue. I certainly want to carry on as squibbing officer, it's such a unique experience.

“In fact, one man came all the way from Dudleigh in the West Midlands just to watch the squibbing.”

Mercury photographer Jeff Searle and news editor Matthew Colledge were both privileged to take part in the explosive display.

Matthew said: “It was an amazing experience. I was surprised at how nervous I was just beforehand but it was absolutely fantastic and the reaction of the crowd made the whole thing worthwhile.”

Simon Carr from Vagabonds CC scooped the Pariah trophy for the longest burning squib in Friday's display.
