Established Carnival Club celebrates its 40th anniversary in style

THE YMCA Carnival Club celebrated its 40th year on Saturday with an evening of dinner and dancing at the Bridgwater Sports and Social Club.

Past and present members celebrated the landmark in style by dressing in their finest outfits and indulging in a three-course meal.

Carnival committee president Doug Robson's wife Pam was a guest speaker on the night and presentations were made to members of the club, including a large celebration cake.

Lynne Leigh, who has been involved with the carnival club since 1969, said: "We all had a fantastic night.

"Everyone enjoyed mingling with past and present club members and it was great to see such a huge turnout."

The club, based at the Bridgwater YMCA and the River Parrett Inn, made its first entry into the Carnival in 1968 with a walking entry called The Tea Plot.

The following year, the club produced its first cart and has continued to be a permanent fixture on Carnival night.

Lynne added: "We have progressed a great deal over the years. We are mainly a female club these days but we receive a lot of support from husbands and partners which helps keep us going."
