Poet Grace's pride at poem publication

POETRY is often regarded as a beautiful method of self-expression.

The ability to use words to convey a mixture of feelings and emotions is a skill that has been acquired by greats such as Thomas Faulkner and Edgar Allan Poe.

For one Bridgwater woman, poetry has been a part of her life for as long as she can remember and has seen her work published in 18 books.

Grace Maycock, of Limetree Close, has recently had another poem published, this time in a book called Lyrics of Life - a collection of work from poets across the country focusing on what they find important in their lives.

Publishers United Press asked Grace to write a poem focusing on Bridgwater and she found carnival was the ideal topic to get her creative juices flowing.

Named Our Carnival Town, Grace's poem explores Bridgwater's rich history of the carnival, recreating the exciting, vibrant atmosphere as it progresses.

Proud Grace said: "I'm very pleased with the way this poem has been written.

"I feel it captures the essence of the carnival for those who have yet to experience it.

"Once I had the idea, it only took me ten minutes to write. As soon as I put pen to paper, I was able to finish it very promptly.

"I usually find myself at my creative peak in the early hours of the morning if I am unable to sleep."

Grace has written many poems on a variety of subjects and events including the conflict in Northern Ireland and Remembrance Day.

She has also suggested that carnival clubs across the town could adopt the poem in preparation for this year's event.

She adds: "I am more than happy for carnival clubs to use the poem if they feel it could be of benefit to them."

Lyrics of Life is available to read at the Bridgwater Library or to buy at Bridgwater Bookshop.
