AN extra pair of eyes will soon be looking after a Bridgwater community centre - thanks to a partnership between police and residents.

Avon and Somerset Police has given the Newtown and Victoria local action team £1,000 towards two new CCTV cameras for the Victoria Park Community Centre.

The cameras will go on the outside of the building and will complete the centre's security set-up, after two cameras were installed inside the building two months ago.

Keith Barnard, chairman of the local action team, said: "The CCTV cameras are a precautionary measure.

"Every area has somebody who loves to damage facilities without realising that they are there for them too.

"It's only a very small minority of people who are like that but we want to take preventative action."

Chris Fry, local action team coordinator for Avon and Somerset Police, said: "The Newtown and Victoria local action team do a lot of voluntary work towards community safety issues, including running a Speedwatch group, and we are very keen to support them."
