SOMERSET County Council has announced the county's new High Sheriff will be sworn in on Sunday, March 9 at Wells Cathedral.
Anne Maw will take over from David Medlock, who held the position in 2007, as the Queen's representative in Somerset for all matters relating to the justice system and to law and order.
The role, which has existed for at least 1,000 years, includes duties such as attending Royal visits to the county and maintaining the loyalty of all subjects to the crown.
The High Sheriff will also lead the Somerset Crimebeat, which aims to give children and young people an opportunity to help combat crime in the community.
Annie Maw said: "Although the prospect of taking on this role is rather daunting, I am very much looking forward to it.
"Through the role I hope to be able to make a good contribution to less fortunate members of the community, and as I am in a wheelchair myself I also hope that will provide inspiration for others to take on similar challenges."
