PLANS to build ten homes on the site of a disused school have been submitted.

Lyndon Homes Ltd submitted the plan to Sedgemoor District Council for ten homes on the site of the former Somerset Bridge School, Hamp Bridge, Bridgwater.

The 0.46 hectare site of brownfield land is situated off Taunton Road and was previously used as a primary school, which closed in 2010.

The plans include off-street parking, bin and recycle areas, and cycle storage. The detached 'family' homes will vary between five and eight people units, with up to four parking spaces per house.

The location of the potential new homes

A spokesman for Lyndon Homes said: "This planning application provides an exciting and vibrant opportunity to bring the site into active residential use to help address local needs of the community in a sensitive and well-designed manner.

"The design proposals will cause no harm to the existing amenities of the area or prejudice highway safety. Traffic movement will be substantially reduced from the current lawful use."

The plans went before North Petherton Town Council at a meeting held last night (August 20) where it was agreed there was no objection to the plans, but three councillors abstained from voting.

Town councillor Anne Fraser said: "The sooner the area is developed, the better."

Some councillors questioned if the plans constituted 'over development' of the small area.

People are able to comment on the application on the council's website.
