AN independent special school near Bridgwater which charges nearly £55,000 a year to attend has been told it ‘requires improvement’ by Ofsted.

The Inaura School, in Burrowbridge, provides education for 28 pupils, aged between eight and 18, who have additional learning needs such as the acquisition of numeracy and literacy skills.

Many of the pupils have failed to thrive in their previous educational settings and some have developmental disorders such as autism or tourettes.

The rating is a step in the right direction for the school, which was rated as ‘inadequate’ by Ofsted following an inspection in January 2016.

According to Ofsted, leaders at the school do not have a ‘robust system’ to check patterns of behaviour and bullying.

In the report it states: “The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is inconsistent. In English, pupils’ writing is not of a consistently good standard.

“In addition, leaders have not secured a strong culture of reading and as a result, pupils do not make the progress they should.”

Ofsted inspectors praised the school’s new leaders, and noted that ‘pupils are proud of their school and many attend well’.
The school has been contacted for a comment.
