AN 8-year-old girl from North Petherton has been given an award for designing an app to keep pedestrians safe near busy roads.
Jasmine Anderson, who attends North Newton Primary School, was asked alongside her classmates to design an app as part of an engineering competition from the University of the West of England.
Jasmine's design, Cabeep, was inspired by wanting to keep young people safe on the roads. The idea is an alarm system which will alert you when you're near a busy road.
She says she's witnessed older children walk out into the road while being on their phones, so she wants to prevent a road accident.
She said: "An engineer came into school and spoke to us about what engineers did and helped us to think of ideas for designs.
"My design is called 'Cabeep'. It is designed to keep teenagers and anyone who uses their phone near roads safe.
"Cabeep is an app you can download on your phone.
"It starts beeping when you are near a busy road and on your phone, so that you divert your attention from your phone to the road.
"I have seen teenagers walk out in the road before on their phones and nearly get hit by cars. They need to pay more attention to the roads to stay safe."
The innovative primary school pupil attended an event on June 29 at the Bristol-based university to receive an award for her design.
Proud mum, Genevieve Wark, said: "Jasmine's so excited and was proud to get a trophy at the university. She says she hopes to enter more engineering competitions.
"Im really proud of Jasmine and I think her idea is really good."
