TWO petrol stations, a two-storey McDonalds restaurant, a hot food drive-thru, a coffee drive-thru, and a series of industrial units have all been applied for as Bridgwater's Dunball Roundabout looks set for huge development.

A lot of this development will help service the workers who use the Park and Ride opened in February.

The J23 Park and Ride has parking for up to 1,500 vehicles so workers can travel to and from the Hinkley Point C site by bus.

The facility can also handle up to 85 HGVs, enabling smaller loads to be bulked into larger single loads to reduce the number of lorries delivering to the site.

Bridgwater Mercury:

With plans for the McDonalds, and one of the petrol stations with two drive-thrus and trade units submitted, this week a THIRD application was submitted - this time for another petrol station and more industrial units.

So what is going where - should all the applications be approved?

1) McDonalds

Bridgwater Mercury:

The two-storey McDonald's restaurant is planned  on land to the south of Dunball Mill.

The proposed McDonald’s restaurant is expected to employ more than 65 full and part time staff.

A McDonald's spokesman said: "With the exception of the management team, almost all of these will be recruited from the local community."

Bridgwater Mercury:

The proposals include a 48 space car park. Access will be directly from the existing road from Dunball Roundabout and a new pedestrian access point is proposed, linking to the existing pathway along the A38.

Salt Developments, who have submitted the applications on behalf of McDonalds, say positive pre-application meetings have taken place with Sedgemoor District Council.

Bridgwater Mercury:

A McDonald's spokesman said: "The dining area will provide views into and out of the proposed restaurant, with dedicated parking forming a visually subservient functional element.

"The design reflects McDonald’s recent design style which has been widely regarded as a significant improvement to their historic corporate image."

2) Petrol Station development to North West of Dunball

Bridgwater Mercury:

The latest application of the three went in this week.

It is for a new garage on land to the North West of Dunball Roundabout.

The plan has been created by Oxford Architects on behalf of Forelle Estates Ltd and concerns a 2.25 hectare site.

Bridgwater Mercury:

The proposed development seeks to provide a petrol filling station and car wash, five industrial units across three buildings and associated drainage and road works.

Bridgwater Mercury:

The site is an agricultural field of an irregular shape and has not been previously developed.

3) Petrol station and drive-thrus for North East of Dunball Roundabout

Bridgwater Mercury:

This large development for a petrol station, two drive-thru units, trade units and parking was submitted just over a fortnight ago.

The application has been submitted by developers Monte Blackburn Ltd, which describes itself as 'one of the fastest growing forecourt providers in the UK'.

Combined, the new hot food drive-thru, coffee drive thru and petrol station are expected to create up to 80 new jobs, meanwhile the new trade counters will also provide 'an unquantifiable but large number of new employment opportunities' according to the developer.

Bridgwater Mercury:

The site comprises roughly 3.2 hectares to the north east of Dunball Roundabout by Junction 23 of the M5, close to the new Hinkley C Park and Ride.

The development will be served by two new access routes, a one-way single lane from the eastbound side of the A39, and a new road which will create a T-junction with the A38

This new road will provide access to the employment uses on site and will be used by customers and staff of the petrol station and drive-thru units.

In 2006 Sedgemoor District Council refused planning permission for a new retirement village on the site including a new dwellings, a care home and communal facilities.

To view the full application visit the planning section of Sedgemoor District Council's website and search for application 42/18/00014.

Puriton Parish Council is expected to discuss this application at its next meeting on Thursday, July 12 in the Village Hall at 6.30pm.
