With the World Cup very much underway, you’ll find that pubs could be the next best thing to actually being in Russia this summer, writes Owen Maers.

The atmosphere is usually immense when England are on, so take your pick from these six in the Bridgwater area.

The Malt Shovel - 2 Wembdon Road, Bridgwater, TA6 7DN (01278 444905)

There’s a wide selection of screens in this smaller pub, from a large projector to smaller screens in the booths.

Offering a wide range of food and drink, Malt Shovel is the place to be before and during a match. They’ve even recently released a new menu of four football themed burgers from Mexico to Switzerland.

The atmosphere for an England game is usually rather loud and there’s plenty of entertainment, with a darts board and snooker table to boot.

With the pub full on bookings for England vs Tunisia, if you’re planning on heading there for either Panama or Belgium - it’s worth giving them a call to book on 01278 444905.

The Cornhill - 6-7 Cornhill, Bridgwater, TA6 3BU (01278 429292)

A pub located in the heart of Bridgwater town centre, the Cornhill is one of the largest pubs in the town. There’s plenty of tables, two large projector screens and the pub remains spacious.

Given the location, it’s the best pub to go to should you be planning a night out for after the match, just around the corner from a Wetherspoons and a short distance from Fever and Palace nightclubs.

Blake Arms - 9 Penel Orlieu, Bridgwater, TA6 3PF (01278 422168)

A small pub just outside of the town centre, the Blake Arms has two large projectors with a higher platform at the back.

While there is a lack of tables, it’s a very social pub that plenty of fans will be flocking to this summer.

While there is no food on offer, the pub has very reasonable drinks prices and the projectors are definitely the selling point.

If you want a good spot get there early because this pub will be packed before kick-off.

West India House - 101 Durleigh Road, Bridgwater, TA6 7JE (01278 452533)

A pubdescribed as “cosy and casual” is located just down the road from Haygrove School.

Should the sun come out in the afternoon, there’s a beer garden where you can enjoy a pint in between the kick offs.

You can also tell they are getting behind the nation, with an array of England flags hanging around the outside of the pub.

If you want to book a table ahead of time, give them a call on the number above.

The Golden Ball - 19 High Street, Bridgwater, TA6 3BE (07760 664982)

A pub located near the centre, this friendly abode is one of many placed you can watch the football this summer.

The Golden Ball is as classic as it gets, so sit down and enjoy a pint and the footballing festival.

Showing all the games on a newly installed big screen, there’s also lots of drinks offer for you to choose from.

The Old Market - 8 Penel Orlieu, Bridgwater, TA6 3PG (07500 832854)

Opposite the aforementioned Blake Arms, The Old Market will be showing plenty of the World Cup action this summer.

There’s also regular live music and a host of drinks offers available for your taking, as well as a pool table if the football isn’t your thing.
