A TEAM of nuclear police at Hinkley Point B have raised more than £1,600 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

The officers from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC) raised the money with a sponsored static cycle ride at the power station.

During the week-long ride which took place during National Dementia Action Week, the intrepid team set out to cycle a total of 1,325 miles – the distance between all of the sites in the UK which CNC has responsibilities for.

But the determined team beat their original target and cycled 1,690 miles.

What drove them was support from other volunteers, including Peter Evans, Hinkley Point B’s station director, Jim McIlvar, Hinkley Point B’s head of security, and Mike Griffiths, CNC’s chief constable.

PC Richie Johnson, who initially thought of the idea, said: “I wanted to organise an event during Dementia Action Week to raise money and increase awareness for the Alzheimer’s Society.

"The fantastic work they do towards transforming the landscape of dementia forever needs to be recognised.

“I am really pleased that so many of my fellow CNC officers and colleagues based at EDF took part in the sponsored cycle, and I want to thank everyone for their efforts.

“We are pleased to have raised £1,650 for the popular charity, and people can still donate by visiting our Just Giving page (justgiving.com/2132challengehinkleypoint).

Peter Evans, Hinkley Point B’s station director, added: “It’s great to see station workers getting involved and engaged with charity and fundraising events, and I would like to congratulate Richie and his team for their efforts.”
