PUPILS at Bridgwater College Academy saved a poorly hedgehog 'just in the nick of time' after they found it on the school grounds with bits of plastic netting wedged into its flesh.

The students were on their lunch break at the school's Quantock Campus last month when they found the poorly hedgehog and alerted teachers.

Staff cut away most of the plastic netting and called Secret World Wildlife Rescue for help.

The hedgehog was taken to the wildlife centre in East Huntspill for treatment and Quantock Vets immediately anaesthetised it to remove more plastic from its neck and applied Manuka Honey to soothe its injuries.

Jade Robuffo, animal carer at Secret World, said: “This hedgehog was found just in the nick of time.

"It had sustained some serious injuries which if left untreated would have been fatal.

“Thanks to the students at Bridgwater College Academy, the hedgehog is expected to make a full recovery.

"It’s nice to know the students care about our wildlife as much as we do.”

Under the care and supervision of Secret World Wildlife Rescue, Henry, as it’s been named by the children, has made a full recovery and was given a clean bill of health by the vet on Thursday (June 14).

Henry will be released back into the wild where he was found.

Georgina Farmer, assistant head of Key Stage 2 at Bridgwater Academy, said: “We are lucky to have such sensible children and caring staff who helped to free the hedgehog and keep him safe and calm until a wonderful Secret World volunteer turned up. We are so happy that the hedgehog is back on the road to recovery.”
